Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya College of Arts and Science in Periyanaickenpalayam, Coimbatore, is chosen by the University Grants Commission for the setting up of KAUSHAL Centre.
From among proposals received from 703 higher education institutions across the country for the setting up of ‘Deen Dayal Upadhyay Centre for Knowledge Acquisition and Upgradation of Skilled Human Abilities and Livelihood (KAUSHAL), the UGC shortlisted 65 institutions, and from these shortlisted institutions, 48 colleges and universities from all over India were earmarked for the UGC grant. Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya College of Arts and Science is one among the five colleges selected in Tamil Nadu.
Having received the honour of setting up the KAUSHAL Centre in its serene campus in Periyanaickenpalayam, Coimbatore, Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya College of Arts and Science will receive the UGC grant of Rs 4.15 crore for two years to set up the ‘Deen Dayal Upadhyay KAUSHAL Kendra’.

- What is the need for such kendras? Our country is facing a demand-supply mismatch in skilled workforce. Majority of our institutions remain disconnected with the requirement of the workplace. The higher education system has to incorporate the requirements of various industries in its curriculum, in an innovative and flexible manner while producing well-groomed graduates. This Kaushal kendra would take-up the vocational and skill education to new levels.
- Why was our college selected for this grant? We have been imparting Vocational training projects like National Mission for Empowerment of Women’; Modular Employable Skills’; Forest department’s Youth Skill Training Programme’; Women’s Development Project’; Puthu Vazhvu Project’; Setting up of Vocational Training Centres in Indonesia, Zimbabwe, and Srilanka’; Community Development through Polytechnic’, of Central, and State Governments for the past 50 years. This Vocational and skill training project execution experience, and its successful outcomes, would have certainly helped our selection. Moreover, Infrastructure facilities needed for skill training in different trades are created by top Industrial houses in our college campus, through MOUs.
- How will this help students get jobs? Our Curriculum is framed in consultation with Industrial houses, and it is also aligned with National Skill Qualification Frame work. Emphasis is given on hands- on practical training, and internship training. Industries are in need of skilled work force; our curriculum will ensure students to secure jobs in reputed Industrial houses, immediately after the completion of the course.
Model for B.Voc Programme
- Students who have successfully completed their higher secondary (10+2) will be eligible for admission
- Duration of the programme is Three years
- Every year, student will be in the college for first 4 months to cover the General and Vocational Education component of Curriculum.
- Next 8 months, student has to be in the partner industry as intern, and
- College Staff will monitor Curriculum, attendance, discipline, assessment, etc.
- During the internship, student will attend college once in 15 days to review the student’s performance appraisal in the industry.
- Part of Internal Assessment Marks will be assessed by the industry
- Assessment and Certification by Sector Service Council, through National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), Govt. of India.
- Degree will be awarded by Bharathiar University, Coimbatore (from June-2016).
Basic Principles of Curriculum Design
Designing and developing model industry-linked curriculum and content, aligned with Qualification Packs(QP) / National Occupational Standards(NOS) for various job roles.
- General component : 24 credits are allotted to general component which constitute of communication skill, Environmental Studies, Value Education, Soft skills and so on. It is evaluated by the Controller of Examination of our College.
- Vocational Component: 36 credits are allotted to Vocational components which constitute of Skills of Job roles. Evaluation will be conducted by the respective Sector Skill Council (SSC) of National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC).
